The death toll from rain-related incidents in Himachal Pradesh has tragically reached 80, with 52 of these fatalities linked to disasters such as landslides, flash floods, and cloudbursts. Additionally, 28 deaths were reported due to other causes, including road accidents, as per the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA). The Mandi district has been particularly affected, recording 17 deaths, while Kangra follows with 11 fatalities.
According to the SDMA's report covering the period from June 20 to July 7, the 28 deaths categorized under 'other causes' include incidents like electrocution, snake bites, and falls from steep areas.
An official from the SDMA stated, 'As of July 7, the cumulative data indicates that the state has experienced 80 deaths—52 from rain-related incidents and 28 from road accidents.' Among the rain-related fatalities, there were 14 due to cloudbursts, 8 from flash floods, and 1 from landslides, with others resulting from electrocution, drowning, and falls caused by adverse weather.
The report also highlights that 128 individuals have sustained injuries, with 320 homes completely destroyed and 38 partially damaged. Furthermore, the loss of livestock and poultry has reached 10,254, alongside public infrastructure damage estimated at Rs 69,265.60 lakh. The SDMA has recorded 23 flash floods and 19 cloudbursts this monsoon season, along with 16 landslides, illustrating the extensive disruption in the hilly regions.
Significant destruction to crops, roads, bridges, and power infrastructure has been reported, particularly in Mandi, Kullu, Kangra, and Shimla. Relief camps are being established, and rescue operations are actively underway with the support of NDRF and SDRF teams.
The SDMA has advised the public to remain vigilant and steer clear of high-risk areas near rivers, steep slopes, and construction sites. The government is closely monitoring the situation and is extending support to families affected by these calamities.
